CHAPTER TWENTY

Eric was not a food person, but even he had to admit that the meal was good. Grilled fish cooked with herbs and a fruit that tasted like lemon even though it did not look like one, plus hearty bread and a salad made of herbs foraged in the forest left him feeling better than a piece of jerky and bowl of ramen ever had.

Their meal finished, Signe had Ketil show Eric to his room. He was a little disappointed to learn that he’d stay in a loft above the stable instead of in the house but he did not complain.

“I trust that will be acceptable?” she had asked, to which he had responded. “It will do…for now.” He thought that made him sound both humble and ambitious, which he liked, and he’d followed Ketil out to the loft.

“Is there anything else, Sir Eric?” the old man asked once he’d shown him up to a corner of the hayloft that was relatively free of hay.

“No, Ketil. I think I’m good if you leave that pitcher of water.”

“Of course, sir.” Ketil said and placed the pitcher he’d carried against the wall. Eric waited for him to leave before he picked it up and placed it in his Inventory. He didn’t ever want to be stuck in a situation without water again. He had done the same thing at dinner with some of the bread.

“I guess this is home for now,” he said to Jim.

“I suppose so.” The skull nodded. “Is it a step up or down from your last place?”

“Step…down,” he said and cringed when a rat scuttled into the hay.

Eric wanted to say more and that this would be fine but the fury he had felt upon leaving the Hul of Growg billowed inside him. He had moved nonstop since he’d come to this world. The only chance he’d had to think before this was when he’d woken in the monastery and so much had changed since then. He’d been taken prisoner, bonded, taken to a new land, and forced to survive a dungeon-like cave. It had only been a few days but it felt like months.

At this point, he could no longer deny that he was in a different world. Whatever this place was, there was no escaping it. But he didn’t want to blame himself either. Should he have gone to that strip mall for a chance to make money being an experimental guinea pig? In hindsight, the answer was no, but how was he supposed to know he wouldn’t be testing allergy medication or whatever?

Signing up for experiments like that might sound trashy, but that was how medicine progressed, wasn’t it? He didn’t think he’d made that decision out of the best of intentions, but that didn’t mean being shoved into another dimension was his fault, either. He had been desperate and abandoned by almost everyone he knew.

No, Eric didn’t feel guilt but anger. He was angry at the recruiter jerk for pushing him through the portal.
